         Shaniwar Wada is one of the most popular monuments in Pune. Shaniwarwada , a palace fort at the center of Pune. Shaniwarwada was the stately mansion originally built as the residence of the Peshwas. The foundation of the mansion was laid by Bajirao 1 in the year 1730 AD and construction was completed in 1732 AD at a cost of Rs. 16,120. The ceremonial foundation of the fort was laid on Saturday, January 10, 1730. Therefore the place was named as Shaniwarwada which is a combination of Shaniwar (Saturday) and Wada which means residence complex. The opening ceremony was held on January 22, 1732 which was also a Saturday.

         It used to be the head quarter of the Peshwas and it symbolizes Pune's culture. Looking at the construction understands how the structure was built giving highest priority to the security. The main entrance is known as 'Delhi Darwaja'. it is about twenty one feet tall. the other gates are called Mastani or Alibahadur Darwaja, Khidki Darwaja, Ganesh Darwaja and Narayan Darwaja.Currently the palace fort has five gateways, nine bastion towers, the foundations of the original buildings. Observing the structure and foundations of the wada will help you in imagining how gigantic this residence of Peshwa was. Although the fort was destroyed in fire in 1828, we can still see so many things there. You can see the descriptions of living area of the fort there in the fort. Now, this place is developed like a garden.

Light and sound show: A light and sound show set up at a cost of Rs 1.25 crore is the main attraction.
