        Matheran is an idyllic hill station in Maharashtra that is popular for its scenic beauty and laid back pace. Matheran is a fascinating hill-station 80-km east of Mumbai in Raigad district is situated at 803 meter above sea level. Matheran was a popular hill resort for the British. Matheran was founded by Collector of Thane - Sir Mallet in 1880.  He first sited this mountain from the village 'Chowk'. He climbed the hill from “one tree point”. Britisher developed this hill station as their summer resort. This is the main reason why all the points of Matheran have english names.

        This is the place truly loved by all - Picnic Lovers, Trekkers as well as jungle lovers. An enthusiastic trekker can trek up to Matheran from Neral, a 8 k.m. trek. One can also travel by car or taxi from Neral to Dasturi or Mount berry Point. Automobiles are not allowed in the Matheran. One has to park the cars at Dasturi and walk in to the Matheran. Available mode of transfer in Matheran is horse-ride. Matheran is truly a unique place as it is 'Pollution Free Town' .

Best Viewing point:

There are many points for sight seeing, places which really make you feel good. Matheran has many "lookout points" that provide spectacular views of the Western Ghats and lush plains dotted with villages far below. These include Panorama Point, Monkey Point, Porcupine Point, Louisa Point, Echo Point, Charlotte Lake, King George Poin, One Tree Hill, Chowk Point,sundet Point, Market Place, Mount Barry and Rambagh Point.

  • Panorama point :- As the name suggests, this can be called as “king” of the points. Situated at Matheran end, it has valleys on east andwest side. It gives a panoramic view of the Sahyadri ranges , that's why it's named as Panorama point. Famous for the view of sunrise and the longest point in Matheran. This place is most suitable for picnic. It is about 6 kms from the Post Office.

  • Monkey Point :- Money Point named because there were monkeys abounding on that side formerly. From here facing Hart Cliff, and experience the delightfulness of echo sound. If one makes a noise or sound, it echoes back nearly six/seven times and the echo is distinct, clear and full. It is about 3 kms from the Post Office.

  • Louisa Point :- Situated on west side of Matheran. it offers the magnificient views of the ruined forts Prabal and Vishalgarh. 

  • Echo Point :- This is midway between charlotte & Louisa point. his one place mostly visited by love buds, who express their feeling not by flower or by cards but they but they shout it out at top of their voice. The sight of water fall from here will be a delight to watch. It is about 2 kms from the Post Office. 

  • Charlotte Lake :- The main drinking water for the town comes from Charlotte Lake, away from the edge of the hill top. The lake has a splendid view with the dam at one end a temple, 'Pisarnath Mandir' at the other. 1 k.m. from the market place. Charlotte Lake is about 2 kms from the Post Office. 

  • King George Point :- A must visit point in monsoon as it offers a beautiful view of the waterfall formed by the water overflowing from Chharlott Lake.  One can even reach he mouth of the waterfall with care. Strong wind prevents the water from falling down and throws it back.

  • One Tree Hill Point :- For Many years, there was only one tree at this point & hence the name. This was the point from where mallet first came to Matheran in 1850. It is about 3 kms from the Post Office on Shivaji Road.

  • Chowk Point :- It is about 4 km from the Post Office. From here you can be seen Karnala Fort, near Panvel, Vishalgad, Prabal Fort,  One Tree Hill, Karjat, Palasdari and Chowk Village.

  • Sunset Point :- Famous for Sunset. A deep forest nearby can be easily seen. 'Prabalgad' can also be seen from this point. Around 4 kms. from main market.

  • Mount Barry :-  It is one of the spots with highest altitude, offering a breathtaking view of the ghats and villages. It is close to the Governor’s hill.

  • Market Place :- Even the bazaar is just that a small marketplace, not a commercial shopping complex. It runs the length of one street, and contains shops and stalls that sell the produce of Matheran. You can see workmen hunching over strips of leather, fashioning the Kolhapuri chappal that Matheran is famous for Leather bags, leather belts, leather shoes, leather caps and many more other leather products. Workmanship is exclusive and the prices reasonable.

  • Rambaug Point :- It is about 2 kms from the Post Office. From here Garbut Point, Karjat Town and Khandala Point can be viewed. 

The best time to visit here is during or after the monsoo October to May.
