Marine Drive Marine Drive Marine Drive

Marine Drive is a skillfully laid-out boulevard in South Mumbai. It is actually an upturned 'C'-shaped six lane concrete road, which lengthens to 3 km along the coastline - a natural bay. The road links from Walkeshwar (where the Maharashtra State Governor's Bungalow is located) to Nariman Point (where all the high rise sky scrapers of Mumbai are located). The Marine Drive, Officially called 'Netaji Subhashchandra Bose Marg'.Marine Drive is situated over reclaimed land facing west-south-west. Back Bay is part of the Arabian Sea. It is so-called because the original City of Bombay was a small township around Fort St. George, the former Portuguese Casa da Orta, and which faced the harbor, which is called Front Bay; therefore, the bay behind the city was called 'Back Bay'.

Marine Drive is also known as the 'Queen's Necklace' because at night time when the street lights are switched on, it looks like a glittering diamond necklace - a sight to behold. Marine Drive looks beautiful during the rains so we couldn't pass the opportunity to visit the sea. Every year, hoards of Bombayites and tourists flock to to the sea-side at Marine Drive and Worli Seaface to experience the Bombay rains. When the tide is high and waves overflow onto the promenade, it makes a breath-taking sight. Along the entire stretch of the road is a broad promenade that has people frequenting to take in the fresh incoming breeze from the Sea.The setting sun in the evening is absolutely soul touching and a soothing sight in the otherwise chaotic city of Mumbai. One may also see a decent line up of palm trees along the side. Trees are a rarity here, considering the area surrounding Marine Drive has seen a lot of construction over the years, loosing much of its old greenery. At the northern end of Marine Drive is the location of Chowpatty beach which is among the more clean beaches of Mumbai.
